On September 10th, 2025, Biocenter Finland and the University of Helsinki welcomed Biocenter Finland’s newly appointed international Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) to Helsinki. The SAB, composed of leading experts from top European institutions, was invited to meet Biocenter Finland’s national technology platforms, learn about their work, and share insights from their own organizations.

The day was designed as a two-way exchange: SAB members introduced themselves and their expertise to the Finnish research community, and in turn, the platforms presented their latest developments and future visions. This dialogue underscored both the global dimension of research infrastructures and the crucial role Biocenter Finland plays in enabling cutting-edge science.
“Our platforms are the backbone of Finnish life science research. By providing access to cutting-edge technologies and deep expertise, we enable development of innovative ideas to breakthrough discoveries,” said Olli Silvennoinen, Director of Biocenter Finland, in his opening remarks.
Next, the SAB members shared perspectives on infrastructure activities at their home institutions, providing valuable international context. Their reflections set the stage for Biocenter Finland’s platform presentations, which showcased their latest developments and future directions. These sessions displayed the wide range of services available to both Finnish and international scientists and businesses. Presentations covered diverse areas ranging from genomics and single-cell omics to model organisms, advanced imaging, and data-driven science.
The SAB members gained valuable insights into Biocenter Finland’s platforms. Carl-Henrik Heldin, Chair of the SAB and Professor of Molecular Cell Biology at Uppsala University, praised the Finnish model: “The SAB was very impressed by the excellent quality of the services provided by the platforms and the manner in which Biocenter Finland has been able to coordinate them.”

Collaboration and Community
Throughout the event, collaboration was the key theme. The dialogue between SAB members and Finnish platforms demonstrated how combining expertise and sharing resources strengthens Finland’s position as a leader in life science research while also contributing to global scientific progress.
The evening gathering continued in the same spirit. SAB members, platform leaders, and researchers engaged in informal discussions over dinner and music, further reinforcing the sense of community and shared purpose that defines Biocenter Finland.

Looking Ahead
More than just a scientific showcase, Biocenter Finland Day 2025 served as a powerful reminder of the role research infrastructures play as engines of discovery. By bringing together people, platforms, and ideas, Biocenter Finland continues to foster innovation and excellence in life sciences.
A heartfelt thank you to all SAB members, speakers, organizers, and participants for making the day so inspiring. We look forward to seeing the new collaborations and discoveries that grow from here!
