At its winter meeting, EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) Council nominated Anthony A. Hyman as EMBL’s next Director General. Professor Hyman is currently director of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) in Dresden, Germany, and holds a Professorship of Molecular Biology at the Technische Universität Dresden. Hyman is known for his groundbreaking work on cell biology, particularly on the organization and function of cellular organelles. He will begin his new role on March 31, 2026.
In his statement, Hyman expressed enthusiasm for joining EMBL during a time of rapid change in the life sciences: “New technologies are giving us access to molecular, cellular, and tissue-level information with precision and scale that simply did not exist a decade ago. Together with modern computational approaches, including AI, this creates a real opportunity to connect molecular mechanisms to the organization of cells and tissues in ways that were not possible before.”
Biocenter Finland warmly congratulates Professor Hyman on his appointment and looks forward to continuing close collaboration with EMBL under his leadership!
Finnish Life Sciences Research works in close collaboration with European Life Sciences Services
Finnish life science research is closely connected to leading European life science research institutions. Finland is a member of EMBL and the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC). In addition, the Institute of Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is part of the Nordic EMBL partnership for Molecular Medicine.
EMBL is the leading center for cutting-edge infrastructures in Europe that are available for all Finnish researchers. EMBL also provides training and funding for predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows. Biocenter Finland encourages Finnish life science researchers to actively use EMBL services and strengthen cross-European collaboration.
